Adam Silver: China asked for Daryl Morey’s firing, ‘There’s no chance that’s happening’

Adam Silver continued to walk an extremely fine line on the Daryl Morey-China kerfuffle on Thursday Robin Roberts asked the NBA commissioner about his use of “regrettable” in a statement about Morey’s tweet Silver was visibly uncomfortable, but ultimately went further than he’s previously gone in defending Morey  “We were being asked to fire him, by the Chinese government, by the parties we dealt with, government and business We said there’s no chance that’s happening, there’s no chance we’ll even discipline him,” Silver said Advertisement  “Maybe I was trying too hard to be a diplomat,” Silver said about his league’s statement that effectively threw Morey under the bus Then after multiple minutes of throat clearing about freedom of expression and the difference between Chinese fans and the Chinese government, Silver admitted that the NBA is bleeding money  “The losses have already been substantial. Our games have not been back on the air in China as we speak,” Silver said “I’m not even sure where we’ll go from here. The financial consequences have been and may continue to be fairly dramatic ”  It seems safe to say that if one unremarkable tweet could cause such financial chaos, it maybe wasn’t that smart to stake so much of the league’s future to China in the first place
