Copper Foiling Tools for Stained Glass : Using a Foiler in Copper Foiling

Hi. Today we’ve been talking about our tools
that were used for our Copper Foiling Projects. Specifically, right now, we are talking about
our foil tools. Our foiling tools and how we would burnish our foil to our glass. Burnishing
is a process by which you adhere the copper foiling to your glass so that you can solder
the pieces together. There are several different types of copper foiling tools that you can
use to burnish with. We’ve explained a few in previous clips. There are also some mechanical
ones that you can purchase as well as hand gripped ones that get all three sides or two
sides at a time. This particular one is called a foiler. And you would just use this little
slit in the back which is underneath the adhesive side of your copper foil. Stick your glass
inside as such, and hold one side with your thumb as you run the tool over your glass.
This gives you a nice, uniform width on each side of your glass of your copper foil and
you would come up, go around the edge and continue all the way around your piece. So,
as you can see, this is a very handy little tool. Keep in mind, you will still have to
burnish down on the edges to get these nice and uniform that your solder can adhere to
them.
