Copper reaction with nitric acid

Copper reaction with nitric acid

most metals readily react with
hydrochloric acid but not all metals and in these test tubes here I have copper and
on the test tube on the left I’m going to put some hydrochloric acid and we can
see we’re getting no reaction no bubbling no reaction whatsoever however it’s not resistant to all acids
if we use an oxidizing acids such as nitric acid we can get a reaction to
occur very readily you see the bubbling or making nitrogen
oxides of air a variety of nitric oxide gasses we call that air pollution and
you can see we have a very very very dark blue solution and that is the
character solution of copper is between green and blue and so
although it resistant to hydrochloric acid copper is not resistant to nitric
acid this is another example of an oxidation reduction reaction
