“EL MISTERIO DE COPPER BEECHES” (1912), EL OTRO HOLMES DE GEORGES TRÉVILLE

THE COPPER BEECHES Sherlockian and holmesian friends, we continue talking about Sherlock Holmes movies, or silent movies yet. And, well, in the previous program we watched a Georges Treville film. Today we will see the other one: ‘The Copper Beeches’ or ‘The Mystery of Copper Beeches’. But first, we’ll talk a little about the other Sherlock Holmes films which came immediately afterwards. In 1913 we have ‘Sherlock Holmes and the Sign of Four ‘ or ‘Sherlock Holmes solves the Sign of the Four’ in the United States with Harry Benham as Sherlock Holmes. A movie completely lost today. In 1914 in Germany we have ‘Sherlock Holmes vs Doctor Mors’, starring Ferdinand Bonn. It is also completely lost. But at the end of 1914 it is when it occurs something really amazing, and it is that in two consecutive days two versions are released of ‘A Study in Scarlet’ in different countries: on December 28 in the UK and on December 29 in the United States. In United Kingdom, it’s played by James Bragington and directed by George Pearson, and it even has the segment of the mormons. In the case of the United States, hold to your seats, who plays John Watson is none other than John Ford himself, the future great film director, one of the best film directors of the history, and especially westerns, which with his brother was starting to make films; and it is his brother who plays Sherlock Holmes, who directs the film. Allso in that film we have the segment of the mormons, something that would be nothing usual in later versions. both movies are authentic jewelry collector. If one of them appeared, both are lost, of course they would have a tremendous value. In the case of the second not only by Sherlock Holmes, but also for the case of having John Ford as John Watson. But today we will see the second of the two films that has been preserved of Georges Trevile, in this case ‘The mystery of Copper Beeches ‘or’ The Copper Beeches’. You we’ll see again that it is a Sherlock Holmes that is not accompanied by Watson, it is said that Georges Treville much ego, and he did not want to share screen with anyone, so Watson did not appear in the movies and moreover, it’s curious that Sherlock Holmes does not appear in this case until practically, well until the second half of the film and, well, in this case also it is presumed that the story is shot in collaboration with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In fact, it was filmed in England, although the actors were French and the director was French, Adrien Caillard, but it was filmed in England. Well, as in the previous case, we have added music we have added Spanish subtitles [and preserved English ones], in this case, to the intertitles. So, we expect you to enjoy this version of ‘Sherlock Holmes and The Mistery of Copper Beeches’. THE COPPER BEECHES I certify by this that
