One-of-a-Kind Jewelry at Styles & Stones

YOU’RE WATCHING LOCAL NEWS DURANGO. I’M WENDY GRAHAM SETTLE. LOCAL JEWELRY ARTIST CAROLYN PLESTED MAY CREATE
HER WORKS OF ART TO PLEASE ONLY HERSELF BUT SHE SELLS IT TO HELP OTHERS. PLESTED IS ONE OF 10 DURANGO AREA ARTISTS
WHO WILL SELL THEIR WEARABLE ART AT THE 15TH ANNUAL STYLE AND STONES JEWELRY SHOW SET FOR
NOON TO 6 P.M. ON FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 6, AT THE FIRST UNITED
METHODIST CHURCH IN DURANGO. STYLES AND STONES STARTED AS A FUNDRAISER
FOR THE ARTS AND HAS SINCE SUPPORTED A VARIETY OF CAUSES, INCLUDING THE MANNA SOUP KITCHEN
AND HOSPICE FOR MERCY. FOR THE PAST FOUR YEARS, THE SHOW HAS SUPPORTED
THE CANCER COALITION OF SOUTHWEST COLORADO AND PLESTED HAS BEEN A PARTICIPATING ARTIST
FROM THE BEGINNING. PLESTED FINDS HER GEMS AND BEADS AT THE LA
PLATA COUNTY GEM AND MINERAL SHOW AS WELL AS THE WORLD-RENOWNED TUCSON GEM, MINERAL
AND FOSSIL SHOWCASE. THEN SHE SEES WHAT SHE CAN DO WITH THEM TO
CREATE BRACELETS, NECKLACES AND EARRINGS. AS UNIQUE AS THE STONES THEMSELVES, WE, WE
CREATE FOR OURSELVES, AND FROM OURSELVES. THE INSPIRATION HAS TO BE SOMETHING WE LIKE. AND THIS SOUNDS FUNNY, BUT YOU KNOW, NOT DOING
IT SPECIFICALLY FOR SOMEONE ELSE, YOU’RE, YOU’RE REALLY DOING IT ON A BASIC LEVEL TO
PLEASE YOUR OWN EYE AND YOUR OWN SENSES. ALL THE ARTISTS CONTRIBUTE AT LEAST 30 PERCENT
OF SALES TO THE CANCER COALITION OF SOUTHWEST COLORADO. THE CANCER COALITION IS AN ALL-VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION
THAT PROVIDES GAS VOUCHERS FOR TRAVEL TO TREATMENT CENTERS AND $500 MINI-GRANTS TO HELP CANCER
PATIENTS WITH NONMEDICAL EXPENSES LIKE GROCERIES OR UTILITY BILLS. COALITION VOLUNTEER BJ BOUCHER SAYS THE GROUP
HELPS FROM 60 TO 75 CANCER PATIENTS ANNUALLY AND GIVES AWAY FROM $50,000 TO $75,000 ANNUALLY
IN ARCHULETA, LA PLATA AND SAN JUAN COUNTY, THE STYLE AND STONES SHOW RAISES ANYWHERE
FROM $4,000 TO $6,000 FOR THE COALITION. I THINK WE ALL FEEL REALLY, REALLY SPECIAL
ABOUT SUPPORTING THE CANCER COALITION, FOR MORE THAN ONE REASON. ONE IS THAT THEY’RE ALL-VOLUNTEER, AND I THINK
EACH OF US HAS A CONNECTION TO, TO A CANCER PATIENT AND CANCER SURVIVOR, CANCER DEATHS. SO IT IS SOMETHING EACH OF US CAN FEEL. BOUCHER SAYS THE SHOW IS WELL WORTH ATTENDING
BECAUSE IT HAS TURNED INTO A REUNION PARTY OF SORTS WITH FANS RETURNING YEAR AFTER YEAR. ADMISSION IS FREE. COALITION VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE LIGHT REFRESHMENTS. IT’S JUST GORGEOUS. YOU WON’T FIND A MORE WONDERFUL PLACE TO LOOK
AT THINGS THAT WOMEN LOVE TO WEAR AND A GREAT TIME FOR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING, A GREAT TIME
FOR BIRTHDAY SHOPPING, A GREAT TIME FOR GETTING YOURSELF READY FOR THOSE EVENTS THAT ARE COMING
UP, WHETHER THERE ARE WEDDINGS OR ANNIVERSARIES OR WHATEVER, YOU CAN’T FIND A BETTER PLACE
TO SHOP. ONCE AGAIN, THE SHOW IS FROM NOON TO 6:00
PM ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, AT THE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN DURANGO. THANKS FOR WATCHING THIS EDITION OF LOCAL
