DOZENS OF LOYAL CUSTOMERS PLANNING TO HAVE LUNCH OR DINNER AT A POPULAR SOUTH OMAHA RESTAURANT. THE DOUGLAS COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT POSTED A TEMPORARY CLOSED SIGN ON THE BUSINESS’S FRONT DOOR! MIKE MCKNIGHT TELLS US WHY — IN THIS SIX ON YOUR SIDE INVESTIGATION. LIKE EVERY FRIDAY THE HENDRICKS EXPECTED TO READ A MENU NOT A HEALTH DEPARTMENT CLOSED SIGN AT THE GI FORUM. BRIAN HENDRICKS/ CUSTOMER SAID, “ITS A NORMAL THING FOR US ON A FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND ITS KIND OF A SHOCK TO SEE IT CLOSED ON A THURSDAY AND FRIDAY.” TWO WEEKS AGO A HEALTH INSPECTOR FOUND 13 CRITICAL VIOLATIONS WHICH THE RESTAURANT STAFF RECTIFIED. BUT IN A RE INSPECTION THURSDAY 10 ISSUES RESURFACED LIKE THE TEMPERATURE OF FOOD KEPT ON THE COLD TABLE BEFORE COOKING. PHILLIP LORDEMANN/GI FORUM COMMANDER SAID, “SOME OF THE ITEMS WEREN’T AT 41 DEGREES, THEY WERE JUST ABOVE 41 DEGREES.” THE CLUB COMMANDER SAYS OTHER VIOLATIONS INCLUDE TWO FOOD CONTAINERS IN THE COOLER NOT DATED AND HEALTH CODES REQUIRE BAR SOAP NOT JUST SANITIZER AT SINKS. CUSTOMER SAFETY PRACTICES THE RESTAURANT STAFF MUST FOLLOW. PHILLIP LORDEMANN/GI FORUM COMMANDER SAID, “THEY ARE ON THE COMPUTERS GOING THROUGH A CLASS TO GET CERTIFIED WHICH BRINGS US UP TO SPEED WITH WHAT THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT WANTS.” THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT IS WORKING WITH THE STAFF TO REOPEN THE GI FORUM. THE COMMANDER HOPES BEFORE TUESDAY TO AVOID A BIG BITE OUT THE MCKNIGHT SAYS, “BEING CLOSED FOR THREE AND A HALF DAYS BY THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT MEANS A LOSS OF REVENUE THAT COULD ADD UP TO $15,000. PHILLIP LORDEMANN/GI FORUM COMMANDER SAID, “WE TAKE CARE OF OUR BUSINESS AND WE WANT TO MOVE ON BUT ITS A BIG HIT.” ONCE THE GI FORUM IS CLEARED TO REOPEN THE HEALTH INSPECTOR WILL FREQUENT THE CLUB. TOM HENDRICKS/ CUSTOMER, “ITS PART OF SOUTH OMAHA AND ITS BEEN DOWN HERE FOR YEARS SO HOPEFULLY THEY’LL GET THIS RECTIFIED.” THE GI FORUM IS A HISPANIC VETERANS CLUB OPEN TO THE PUBLIC WITH TACOS ON THE MENU AND HEROS ON THE WALL. THE STAFF WILL FOLLOW HEALTH DEPARTMENT ORDERS SO THE FOOD IS TASTY AND SAFE WHEN CUSTOMERS ARE ALLOWED TO RETURN. NEAR 20TH AND N MIKE MCKNGIHT WOWT6 NEWS THE G-I FORUM COMMANDER SAYS — THE RESTAURANT WILL NOT ONLY SURVIVE THE FINANCIAL HIT CAUSED BY THE TEMPORARY CLOSING — BUT GET BETTER. WE’RE LEARNING — A MAJOR RENOVATION PLAN — IS CURRENTLY IN THE WORKS, FOR THE CLUB.
