Why Sheryl Sandberg Traded the Golden Rule for the Platinum Rule | SuperSoul Sunday | OWN

OPRAH: I thought this was so memorable and struck me. When you were saying, everybody knows about the Golden Rule. And you had lived by the Golden Rule for the longest of times. But through this process, you created a Platinum Rule. Which is? SHERYL: Well, the Golden Rule is do what you think you want done to you. And that’s what I had done. OPRAH: Do unto others what you would have them do unto you. We all know that one. SHERYL: Except I was wrong about, like, not bringing it up. Asking to do anything. I realized we don’t know what people who are really going through something we’ve never experienced want. So the Platinum Rule is, do what they want. OPRAH: Mm-hmm. SHERYL: So you can ask someone, you know, look. You’re my very dear friend. I know you’re going through this real hardship. And we work together. What’s better for you? Every morning, should I say, how are you today? OPRAH: Mm-hmm. SHERYL: And acknowledge? Or would you rather I not say anything while you’re at work? OPRAH: Ask. SHERYL: Ask them. OPRAH: What a profound thing. Ask. SHERYL: And then — and then — and then listen. And then really listen.

  2. It's long, long been known as 'Get your eyes off yourself & onto another (considering their perspective as the primary need rather than your own perspective)'.

No disrespect meant to Sheryl, but it's not a new concept, nor did she invent it. She only branded/marketed it, & has a platform to bring it to public view.
